Have you had your new wheelie bin?

Welshpool householders should have received their new waste and recycling kerbside collection service containers and wheelie bins from Powys County Council, if not they’re on the way.

The new service will be introduced on September 3 to tackle the county’s sluggish response to recycling with a big fine hanging over our collective heads if we don’t all do our bit. Recycle collections will be weekly but the wheelie bins are fortnightly.

Householders should receive three recycling containers - a red box for cans and plastic, a blue box for paper and card and an aqua box for glass, plus a black wheeled bin for non-recyclable rubbish. Food waste caddies can also be requested.

Deliveries are expected to take place over the course of the next four weeks along with a calendar and guide explaining the new service.

Steve Holdaway, Head of Local and Environmental Services for Powys County Council, said: “Making recycling as easy as possible for residents will allow us to prevent waste needlessly ending up in landfill sites, and give us the best chance of reaching the 52% target as set by the Welsh Government.

“We have found the containers to be very useful in helping to boost our recycling rate. More work has to be done to help this figure rise over the coming months, but rolling out the new collections in Welshpool will make a big difference.

“I hope that the town’s residents embrace recycling as much as those in other areas where the service has been introduced and I’m sure they will.”
