Three months until local police shake-up

15/08/2012 @ 05:32

The biggest change in policing for generations is just three months away.

The countdown has begun to the elections for the role of Police and Crime Commissioners, who will be responsible for determining police budgets, deciding upon local policing priorities and commissioning community safety services.

Each force area in Wales and England will have an elected commissioner who will replace the existing police authorities, following a public vote on November 15.

With less than 100 days to go, work is being undertaken to ensure that the transition is as smooth and as seamless as possible for the diverse communities of Dyfed-Powys whilst recognising that the new PCC will undoubtedly have clear plans as regards to future policing governance.

Mr Keith Reeves, Chief Executive of Dyfed-Powys Police Authority said: “Following their take up of office, Police and Crime Commissioners will be required to produce a Police and Crime Plan, which will set the strategic direction for the Force.

“As publicly elected individuals, they will be accountable to the communities they serve and therefore, will need to have a clear understanding of the communities’ priorities as regards to policing and community safety.”

Christine Gwyther has been unveiled as the Labour Party’s official candidate and Christopher Salmon is the Conservative Party’s official candidate. Nominations for candidates close on October 19.
