Wiggins for Welshpool

20/08/2012 @ 09:21

Britain’s first ever Tour de France winner Bradley Wiggins has confirmed that he will be making a competitive appearance in Welshpool next month.

As revealed by our sister site mynewtown last week, the four-time Olympic champion will make his competitive comeback with Team Sky in the eight-day Tour of Britain, which will start its September 14 leg from Powis Castle.

The 32-year-old was given extra time off following his hugely successful summer and skips the Tour of Denmark next week. But his return begins in Ipswich on September 9 before reaching Montgomersyhire five days later.

Wiggins confirmed: “I'm doing the Tour of Britain now. It'll be nice. I'll try to stay fit between now and then so I don't embarrass myself. It'll be good.”

Wiggins has become the darling of British sport following a sensational summer which is likely to make him Britain’s sports personality of the year.

The Welshpool leg of the tour will start from Powis Castle at 10.15am before conducting a lap around the town and heading out towards the Newtown road for an eventual finish in Caerphilly.

Win one of two bikes!

As part of the Tour of Britain, the Town Council has teamed up with Brooks Cycles to run a picture competition for schools in the Welshpool area.

Entries can be made through the school or delivered to the Tourist Information Office. There will be two bikes up for grabs for two age categories.

The certificates and vouchers for the new bikes will be presented at 10am on September 14 by Tony Brooks and Cllr John Meredith (Mayor of Welshpool) on the podium at the start of the Tour of Britain race.

For more information, contact your school or the town council at wtcouncil@btinternet.com.

Best dressed window

Meanwhile, to get Welshpool in the mood, the Town Council is also organising a Best Dressed Window competition for town centre businesses.

It will be a cycling theme with judging taking place on September 12.
