A Welshpool fish and chip shop is hoping to be named as the top takeaway in the UK.

Andrews Fish Bar is one of five restaurants from Wales to be nominated for the regional Independent Takeaway of the Year category at the 25th National Fish and Chip Awards 2013.

And while it is owned and run by Costas Andreou, Andrews is no stranger to winning national awards having been named the top chippy in Wales when his father, who launched the businesses in 1982, was in charge.

Mr Andreou said: “It has been a great year for the shop and I am delighted to have been nominated for this award. The 30th anniversary celebrations were very special and we had more than 600 people come through the doors throughout the day.

“It was a fantastic day and I was just pleased to have been able to give something back to the town and this award would be a bonus.”

Andrews celebrated its 30th anniversary by offering 1982 prices with customers queueing for a chance to buy fish and chips for £1.45.

Now it has been shortlisted for the award run by Seafish, the authority on seafood and will battle it out with 45 other takeaways for the gong, culminating in a glitzy awards ceremony at The Lancaster Hotel in London.

Paul Williams, chief executive of Seafish, said: “The fish and chip businesses will have to up the ante if they are to secure the coveted title, as they are put to the test in a round of secret mystery judging by the Seafish panel over the next few months.

“The judges will scour the country to secretly rate the shops in a number of factors, from food quality to customer service, that businesses must meet in order to progress to the next round.

“The annual National Fish and Chip Awards recognise the quality, value and choice offered by fish and chip shops across the UK. This year’s awards are extra special as they celebrate their 25th anniversary and the team are determined to find the best talent and highest standards in the fish frying industry.”
