Get in train-ing for challenge

24/08/2012 @ 09:31

Organisers of this year’s Race The Train cycling event are hoping for an Olympic bounce and a touch of the Wiggi-factor!

Bike sales have gone through the roof since Bradley Wiggins became Britain’s new king of sport by winning the Tour de France and Olympic gold, and local enthusiasts have been set a charity challenge in the wake of next month’s Tour of Britain which will come through Welshpool.

Today’s news that finally condemned Lance Armstrong to the doping Hall of Shame will also ensure that cycling remains a hot topic in the headlines all weekend, albeit for the wrong reasons.

Welshpool Rotary Club reintroduced the popular event last year, making it cycling-only as opposed to a running event which it used to be in its 1980’s heyday.

Once again, cyclists of all ages and abilities will try to cover the route between Welshpool and Llanfair Caereinion faster than the morning Welshpool and Llanfair Railway’s steam train on Sunday, September 16.

A Rotary spokesperson said: “We were encouraged by last year’s reintroduction which raises valuable funds and expect the Olympics and Tour of Britain to make a big impact this year with a lot more riders anticipated. Early entry is advised to ensure a spot.”

Entry is just £5 per person with forms available from Brooks Cycles or The Royal Oak Hotel.  Alternatively, contact any Welshpool Rotarian. Completed forms must be returned by September 9. Competitors will need to be at Raven Square station by 11am.

Apart from the initial pull up Golfa Bank, the route avoids the main road, but there are some testing climbs along the way. The route will be fully stewarded, with help on hand throughout the race for anyone needing it.
