Maesydre is halfway there

It may only be the start of a new school year, but Ysgol Maesydre has already passed a stiff test on its road to recovery.

The school has endured a troubled time of late with slipping standards resulting in a tough ESTYN school inspectors’ report which placed it in ‘special measures’ and identified 10 main areas of concern.

But following its latest visit from the education watchdog in June, the school received some great news this week.

“Of the 10 to resolve, five have been addressed with the recommendation concerning poor behaviour and the recommendation ensuring that the Governing Body was better informed about school performance, the latest to be fully addressed,” said a school statement.

“The remaining five have been partly or largely addressed with a new Action Plan produced to meet with requirements.”

The school may not be off the watchlist yet but there was backing for head teacher Russell Cadwallader who was brought in during May to lead the fightback.

The statement added: “ESTYN also noted that Mr Cadwallader has managed to bring together all staff and Governors to work as a team. This whole school approach has, in a short time, had a marked influence on pupils’ standards and wellbeing throughout the school.”

During the summer, the school held a ‘Love Your School’ Day which saw residents come together to give it a spruce up. More are planned. ESTYN is expected to make another visit before the end of the year.
