New tourist attraction edges closer

Work on creating a new tourist attraction to welcome visitors to Welshpool has taken a step nearer to starting.

The town council has been negotiating with Powys County Council and landowners over the past three years about turning the site of an old Motte & Bailey Castle opposite Tesco into a public area.

Plans have been drawn up which will include a public pathway around the site as well as car park with the bulk of funding to come via an agreement with Tesco and the work to be administered by Powys.

While no budget has been mentioned, it is hoped that providing all sides pull together, the site could start seeing some activity through the winter.

“This would be a huge plus for Welshpool and provide a lovely entry into the town,” said a Town Council spokesperson.

Railway docks, which were built for the old Llanfair Steam trains bringing stock to the Smithfield, will also be renovated as part of the project with the whole site monitored by CCTV for security.

The Motte & Bailey is thought to be one of the town’s first settlements and dates back 900 years.
