12,400GNS COW & CALF TOP LIMOUSIN BREEDERS’ SALE
Glangwden Herd to 8,200gns
13 animals at 5,000gns or more
Sale grosses £301,972
The British Limousin Cattle Society (BLCS) Breeders’ Dispersal Sale held on Saturday on behalf of the Lowerffrydd & Janos Herds of brothers JG & BC Evans, together with a Production Sale of the Glangwden Herd on behalf of CL & FE Jerman, saw a top price of 12,400gns for a cow and calf outfit when going under the hammer for 7,800gns & 4,600gns respectively.
Heading to EH Pennie & Son’s pedigree Sarkley Herd, Gwern-Yr-Ychain, Montgomery, Powys was the 7,800gns Lowerffrydd Belle, a 2006-born fourth calver by Nenuphar and out of Lowerffrydd Olive, a daughter of one of the Lowerffrydd Herd’s foundation females, Normande Heyday. Belle was sold PD’d in calf to either the AI sire, Lowerffrydd Empire, or the stock bull Bailea Vantage. Her October 2011-born heifer calf, Lowerffrydd Gin, by Bailea Vantage, then made 4,600gns when selling as an “A” lot to MG & EW Evans, Lane Farm, Winnington, Halfway House, Shrewsbury who run the Westpoint prefix. Also heading to the Westpoint Herd were: the 4,200gns Corridan Event sold with her Bial-sired heifer calf at foot, Lowerffrydd Hotpants; two November 2010-born maiden heifers, Lowerffrydd Furnesss and Fluff, both sired by Corridan Dreadnought, at 4,300gns and 4,100gns respectively; Corridan Edith, carrying Sympa and Mas Du Clo breeding, at 4,200gns; the in-calf heifers Lowerffrydd Flipper and Hannem Fannyanne at 3,700gns and 2,700gns respectively; together with Janos Hibiscus, a rising eight month-old heifer calf at 2,800gns, sold suckling her recipient dam.
Held within Welshpool Livestock Market through Official Society auctioneers Newark Livestock Market, the sale from the three Caersws, Powys-based herds comprised 114 pedigree Limousin head together with 47 frozen embryos and a quantity of semen. A very strong sale with some thick-fleshed, well-shaped cows forward drew a packed ring of buyers and continued the ready demand for Limousin breeding stock seen earlier this year. Thirteen animals in all made 5,000gns or over with the sale grossing £301,972. This was complemented by a further £19,000 made up of frozen embryos and semen.
IG Thomson, Airdlin Mains, Ythanbank, Ellon, Aberdeen snapped up another unit with a combined price of 12,000gns which now heads north to his Airdlin Herd. At 7,500gns was Lowerffrydd Enjoyable, an April 2009-born first calver sired by Objat and out of the Nenuphar daughter Dentox Valium, making her a full ET sister to the 30,000gns Lowerffrydd Empire who stood Supreme Champion at Carlisle in May 2010. (The dry cow, Dentox Valium, had earlier sold to A Ewing for 4,000gns on behalf of a private buyer). Selling as an “A” lot to the same buyer, IG Thomson, was Lowerffrydd Enjoyable’s heifer calf at foot, the 4,500gns Lowerffrydd Glitter, September 2011 born, and sired by Bailea Vantage. Enjoyable, who carries a Beef Value of LM+37, was sold PD’d in calf to either the French-bred AI bull Bial or Bailea Vantage. The same buyer, IG Thomson, also took home Corridan Voyage for 8,000gns. 2007-born and sired by Mas Du Clos when out of the dam Corridan Siobhann, she sold with her Bailea Vantage-sired heifer calf at foot, Janos Halo, and again back in-calf when served by Dinmore Foreman. The Airdlin Herd also bought the 4,000gns Janos Flower, by Ionesco and out of Corridan Voyage, when scanned in-calf to Dinmore Foreman (a Wilodge Vantastic son).
Another mother-and-daughter unit secured a price tag of 11,800gns. The dam, Corridan Chelsea, a 2007-born third calver by Goldies Terence and out of the Ronick Iceman daughter Corridan Trinket, made 5,000gns whilst her rising nine month old heifer calf, Janos Galye, by Lowerffrydd Ahoy, made 6,800gns. Both were snapped up by MJ Alford, Staplegrove Livestock, Foxhill Farm, Blackborough, Cullompton. Corridan Chelsea was bred by Corridan Farms, Park Lane, Saxby All Saints, Lincs and went under the hammer carrying a Beef Value of LM+28. A 2007-born third calver, she was sold scanned in-calf to Dinmore Foreman.
Eliciting another five figure price was the mother-and-son combination Corridan Daniella and her bull calf Lowerffrydd Grandmaster. By the Sympa son, Corridan Arkle, and out of the Grahams Samson daughter, Corridan Vivid, Daniella was sold back in calf to DB Davies & Sons, Eisteddfa Fawr, Brynberian, Crymych, Pembs for their Eisteddfa Limousin Herd. The eleven month-old Lowerffrydd Grandmaster, by Bailea Vantage, made 3,700gns to Mr G Hilsdon, Poole Farm, Knowstone, South Malton, Devon for his Poole Herd. Four lots later, the Eisteddfa Herd also purchased the 2009-born Fieldson Alfy daughter, Lowerffrydd Empress, at 5,000gns together with her 4,500gns heifer calf at foot, Lowerffrydd Gladys, by Bailea Vantage. Another to the same home at 4,200gns was Corridan Flower, a served heifer in-calf to either Procters Cavalier or Bailea Vantage, sired by Rossignol and out of the Goldies Oswald daughter, Corridan Viola.
The February 2011-born bull Glangwden Goldmine secured a final bid of 8,200gns when going under the hammer to MH Owens, Glantre, Pont Sian, Llandyssul. By Woodhouse Custer, a Cloughhead Umpire son, and out of the Haltcliffe Ullswater-sired dam, Glangwden Bandale, he sold with a Beef Value of LM+32. Overall, four young bulls from Glangwden averaged £6,693 – all to commercial buyers - including the similarly-bred Glangwden Gerry at 7,000gns when knocked down to WG Wilkinson, Tilber Thwaite Farm, Conniston, Cumbria.
Following the pedigree Limousin livestock, NB Barkley, Harestone Farm, Crathes, Banchory, Aberdeen purchased a quantity of 10 embryos at 520gns each for the matings Corridan Voyage x Objat/Bailea Black BMW. Two Dentox Valium x Haltcliffe Vermount/Veteran/Cloughhead Umpire/Corridan Crofter pairings realized 500gns each to Tecwyn Jones, Tynewydd, Nebo, Llanwrst.
