New ‘voice of Welshpool’ to be launched

19/09/2012 @ 11:06

Make room Welshpool Town Council, there’s a new community group looking to play a lead role in shaping the town’s future.

A meeting is being held tomorrow night (Thursday) at Welshpool Fire Station from 7pm when the entire town is invited to find out what the new Welshpool Active Community Group is all about.

The group is rising from the ashes of the Communities First Partnership and is being driven by Powys County Council, but it will be independent with its own constitution which has been shared with the town council.

“We don't see that this new group steps on the town council’s toes and hope that the council will work in partnership with it,” said a Welshpool Active Community Group spokesperson.

“The aim of this group is to seek to benefit all those who live or work in Welshpool through partnership working with service providers and statutory and voluntary agencies and businesses.

“This inaugural meeting will give residents the opportunity to learn more about the aims of this group and also to elect new members and officers. The committee will consist of a maximum of 10 Welshpool residents and two co-opted individuals who support the work of the committee.

“This exciting new group will give residents the opportunity to have their say and help shape what happens in the community. You do not need any previous experience of sitting on a committee.”

The Town Council has introduced a number of initiatives lately, many of them successful, in a bid to engage with various sectors of local society. Its Welshpool Projects targets the business and commerce community while a new youth council has successfully built a bridge with the town’s high school students.
