End the Borfa Green death trap

20/09/2012 @ 11:16

Concerned parents and residents have contacted mywelshpool this week with a plea to help them clamp down on reckless drivers putting lives at risk.

The third crash of the summer on Borfa Green last week highlighted what residents describe as a potential death trap made worse by motorists ignoring the dangers and driving too fast.

While no-one has been seriously hurt in the accidents, residents say they are far worse than just ‘bumps’ with mangled car bodies emphasising the speeds that cars are travelling.

“It has got worse over the last 12 months,” said resident Gemma Wells. “They are not your usual knocks you’d have on a residential estate. Up here you’d expect someone banging the car when reversing etc. Not bonnets crumpled up due to speeding.”

Gemma, 28, who is a mother to a 16-month-old boy, says parents in particular have become increasingly concerned with near misses reported. The area is home to a lot of young families and children have played alongside the road for generations.

“The problems are all caused by speed and it seems to be the same group of irresponsible drivers,” said Gemma. “We have become extremely concerned and contacted the police, even sending number plates of the drivers responsible, but so far nothing has been done as they don’t seem to think there is a problem.

“But something must be done before someone gets seriously hurt or worse. I am really worried as my son gets older that he will get hit by a speeder when going out to play or when he wants to visit his grandparents close by.

“You shouldn't have to worry about big things like that on a residential estate.”

Borfa Green provides a popular throughway for motorists avoiding the bottle neck at the bottom of Red Bank onto the one-way system. Last year, councillors raised the alarm that traffic had increased considerably through the area and the construction of new housing behind Brookfield Road will only exacerbate the problem.
