Town Hall work ‘ahead of schedule’

The Town Hall external works to the stonework, windows, clock, weather vane and decorations are proceeding slightly ahead of the revised programme, it was confirmed today.

The scaffolding in Hall Street started to come down last week (pictured) and the town council said that the scaffolding around the Severn Hospice is coming down by the weekend. The rest it says will start coming down during the later part of the second week in November, with all scaffolding removed by the end of that month, weather permitting.

“The scheme when complete will ensure that the Town Hall is in a good state of repair for many years to come and continue to be the centre piece of the Town for which is it so famous,” said a council spokesperson.

The initial £85,000 renovation job unearthed some cowboy workmanship pushing costs beyond £200,000, and it was expected to take until Christmas to complete.

A further £100,000 may still have to be spent in the next financial year on upgrading the landmark’s heating system.
