“Cow prison” protest a wash out

23/10/2012 @ 12:49

Only six protesters turned up in fancy dress to make their voices heard against a super dairy being proposed in Leighton.

International campaign group PETA - People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals Foundation - had promised an “exciting” protest and lobbied local residents to show up and support.

But our correspondent said there were only six protesters in fancy dress as prisoners to symbolise a ‘Cow Prison’.

“It was hardly a protest, more a symbolic photo opportunity,” said our man.

Powys County Council’s Regulatory Committee is debating the application today and is expected to recommend to Planning Inspectors that it should be rejected.

The application has been widely opposed by Leighton residents who believe it will impact village life and create health problems. Farmer Fraser Jones says changes must be made to the way dairy farming is done or the industry’s long term future is in doubt.
