New fees for nursing and residential homes in Powys have been approved by the county council’s cabinet.

The county council has been reviewing fees paid to some homes in the county in the light of successful judicial reviews taken against Welsh councils by care home providers.

Cabinet Member for Adult Social Services, Councillor Rosemarie Harris said: “Powys has a duty to provide nursing or residential care where it meets the needs of older of physically disabled people in the county and places more than 400 residents in care homes.

“The council has been reviewing the way it sets rates to ensure that it meets national policies and is fair and just for those businesses providing a valuable service to the county. The cost of nursing and residential care is significant with more than £10million being spent in 2011/2012.

“It is essential that the county council gets value for money but ensures that the rates paid are sufficient to maintain a viable sector in the county so there is provision in the county when needed.

“It is a delicate balancing act but I believe the new increased rates will maintain a viable nursing and residential sector at a rate that the council can afford.”
