Welshpool Livestock Sales report on a highly successful auction at Buttington Cross Welshpool on Monday.

OTMS (73)

A good entry of 73 Over Thirty Month Old Cattle sold very well to average 124ppkg for the older cows, 147.81ppkg for the younger cows, 134ppkg for the older bulls, 147ppkg for the younger bulls, and 165ppkg for the heifer under 48months old. With nine buyers around the ring the top price of the day for an older cow was £1358.88 for a British Blue cow weighing 894kg from E A Rees & Co Borfa Newydd. Two Simmental heifers under 48months of age achieved £1339.52 and £1196.16 from TM & EE &TG Williams Nantygeifr. A Welsh Black bull weighing 1129kg from I Francis Bryndu made £1512.86. E A Rees & Co Borfa Newydd receives the Briarwood Products Ltd prize of £25 for the highest price older cow sold on the day. FAT CATTLE (24)

A good entry of 24 fat cattle sold very well to average 216ppkg for the steers and 207ppkg for the heifers. E R G Huxley Rhosydd Gwynion sold three Limousin steers weighing 527kg to 231ppkg, 545kg to 230ppkg and 561kg to 216ppkg. GW & BA Haynes Trefnant Isaf sold a Welsh Black heifer weighing 525kg and achieved 230ppkg. Also from the home where two Limousin heifers weighing 542kg and 544kg and making 226ppkg and 218ppkg. E R G Huxley Rhisydd Gwynion receives the Briarwood Products Ltd prize of £25 for the highest price per kilo animal sold on the day. An entry of 4308 Prime Hoggets, sold to an overall average of 151ppkg.

Super Lights (17.5kg to 25.4kg) (11) to 113ppkg from D A Rees & Co Esgair. Average of 109ppkg.

Lights (25.5kg to 32kg) (413) to 145ppkg from RG & BM Harding Delfryn. Others to 139ppkg from A Evans Brynperffaith. Average of 124ppkg.

Standards (32.1kg to 39kg) (419) to 167ppkg from S Vogel Lower Tyn y Cefn. Others to 163ppkg from P J Phillips Lower Treverward. Average of 144ppkg.

Mediums (39.5kg to 45.5kg) (1698) to 180ppkg from CL & C Watkins Bank Farm. Others to 175ppkg from W G Jones Cwmduggan. Average of 160ppkg. 

Heavies (45.1kg to 52kg) (484) to 159ppkg from M P Harding Lower Cefnypwll. Others to 157ppkg from D R Owen & Sons Sandilands. Average of 148ppkg. 

Over Weights (Over 52kg) (244) to 147ppkg from C W Smith & Co Cilmeri. Others to 139ppkg from R L Owen Tanycoed. Average of 129ppkg.

CULL EWE (1734)

An entry of 1733 cull sheep on offer for sale today, sold to average £37.48 for the ewes and £54.18 for the rams. Top price of the day for the ewes was £132 per head from C E Pryce Yr Helyg. Top price for the cull rams was £98 per head from EW & KE Benbow Ffrydd Farm. Weekly sale of cull sheep to immediately follow the sale of fat lambs at approximately 12noon.

STORE LAMBS(330)

An entry of 330 store lambs achieving an average of £41. Theave lambs achieving a top price of £50 from DE & KB Owen & Son Rhallt. Mixed and Clean lambs achieving a top price of £56 from D J Owen, 10 Crosslikey. Whether lambs acheiveing a top price of £49.20 from D Hardman Upper Knolls Farm. Tup lambs making a top price of £51.50 from M & K Brown the Rock. Six cade lambs achieving a top price of £10 per head and averaging £8.50.

IN LAMB EWES.

An entry of 140 In lamb ewes achieving an average of £80. Three year old mule ewes scanned doubles achieved a top price of £108 from C A Blackman Burfiled. Full Mouth Pedigree Blue faced Leicester scanned mostly doubles achieved a top price of £120 from B Nicholls Lower East Middleton.

Sale of Store Lambs to Commence at 10.30am next Monday with in lamb ewes to follow immediately.

COWS & CALVES

An entry of 14 cows and calves met with a much better trade with a lot of faces around the ring. Leading the way were tow bids of £2100. First to achieve this was AS & EM Goolden & Sons Cilbach Meifod for a Limousinx 1st Calver with a heifer calf. IL & OG Roberts Crowwood made the same money for a British Bluex 1st Calver with Limousin calf at foot. Two British Bluex 2nd calvers with Limousin Bull calves at foot from RT & J Edwards Llecwedd Ystrad Balamade £2000 and £1920. Three Herefordx 1st Calvers with Limousin calves from John Gore sold for £1420, £1720 and £1750. E J Lewis Rhoslas sold a Limousin Cow and a British Blue cow for £1700 and £1720. Guto Lewis presented a British Bluex 1st Calver with a Limousin calf which made £1620. Overall the prices achieved where as follows: £2000 + 3 lots, £1800 - £2000 1 lot, £1600 - £1800 7 lots, £1400 - £1600 1 lot, £1200 - £1400 1 lot, less than £1200 1 lot. Entries invited for the next sale of Cows and Calves on Monday 18th February 2013.
