Town’s road system begins

The long-awaited start to Welshpool’s new road system begins this week with motorists told to expect disruption.
Around 15 per cent of the Church Street (Spar) Car Park’s capacity will be taken out of use for the next 10 weeks as highways work around the new Tesco store begins.
A spokesperson for Powys County Council confirmed: “This is the first stage of the highways works which will see a new one-way system introduced to the town.”
As part of the construction of a new road through the car park, 50 spaces will be taken out of use for the time being, leaving 270 available spots. An insider on the development has told mywelshpool that the road works could take anything up to 22 weeks to complete which would be close to the planned late-February opening of the massive superstore.
This latest disruption though is a second blow to motorists already facing a frustrating autumn, with Wales and West Utilities carrying out crucial gas upgrading work on the road parallel to St Mary’s Church. That work has seen traffic lights disrupt flow and could last for another five weeks.
