Facebook last night closed the controversial Spotted: Welshpool page which has been allowing people to post anonymous comments about fellow residents.
But as the page ran out of control last night with racist remarks appearing about gypsies alongside more derogatory statements about both men and women (even MyWelshpool was called sh*t by the administrator!) it appears Facebook felt enough was enough.
In its final hour alone, almost 20 statements were posted but by 11pm the page had disappeared. One post even goaded the police that were monitoring the page to “find something better to do”.
The site had close to 1,000 followers and yesterday morning a second page Spotted Welshpool 2 had been created. However, its administrator wants it to be a 'good citizen' to counter the bad feeling caused by the first. This morning he/she admitted that the site will be renamed to reflect the “good side of Welshpool and its people”.
Last night a third page, In the Loop Welshpool, started with a post of our story about the vacated Co-op shop on Berriew Street.
Spotted sites have left a trail of controversy all over the UK but most have been removed, including an unofficial one covering Welshpool High School last week which lasted just 24 hours.
