Council set to hand out ‘ruff’ justice

27/03/2013 @ 01:39

Dogs are on the verge of being banned from large sections of Welshpool as the town clamps down on fouling problems.

A committee has concluded its consultation period with a report submitted to full council tonight (Wednesday) for approval. Dog owners, who have labelled the Dog Banning Orders ‘ruff’ justice, can attend the meeting.

But with a majority of councillors in favour of the ban, dog owners could fall foul of walking their pets on some land owned by Welshpool Town Council who may use CCTV to enforce the Orders.

“The committee received copies of every representation made to the Council and also received a presentation on the health risks,” said Town Clerk, Robert Robinson.

“There has not been a blanket ban on dogs suggested but in children’s areas and where sports are played. The Committee is recommending a small group be created comprising of people like dog walkers and a vet to formulate an educational programme, including possibly a dog walking charter.”

So what’s suggested and where? Below is what's recommended by the committee which shows dogs will be allowed in the new play areas at Brookfield Road and at the new Flash Country Park, but not on Maesydre or other popular open spaces.
