Wi-fi Welshpool

Free internet access is being introduced at two town centre hot spots, but MyWelshpool says why not extend it to the whole town centre as a dynamic business and tourist initiative?

Visitors to the Tourist Information Centre and Town Hall café can now log on to free wi-fi and, while the move is undoubtedly a step in the right direction, we have called for it to go a step further.

“It is a timely move but why not make it the first step towards something more ambitious,” said MyTown Media Ltd co-founder David Williams. “The town has been very quiet over Easter weekend compared to normal bank holidays. The weather has decimated the amount of visitors, so something dramatic is needed.

“These days people are living off their tablets and smart phones but from Shrewsbury onwards there is very little 3G coverage. Welshpool Town Centre being positioned as a free wi-fi hotspot could be that extra incentive for travellers to stop and spend an hour on their way through. It would also show Welshpool is an energetic and welcoming town.”

Unfortunately large parts of the town centre are still without decent mobile coverage, but with a number of innovative companies now offering high speed internet to local village households, and the Welsh Government handing out large grants for installation, now could be the time to find out.

But in the meantime, the town council says this introduction is a good start.

“With MyWelshpool now keeping people up to date with news and information on the town it is important for visitors to be able to access the internet in the town,” said Town Clerk, Robert Robinson. “It is a positive step now visitors can purchase a drink and obtain free WiFi for as long as they stay.”
