We’ve all heard the stories of late about how insurance companies are doing their best to price young drivers out of the market, but even this takes some beating!
Local driver Ben Astley, 22, could be forgiven for thinking it was some sort of an April Fool after receiving a whopping quotation from Vauxhall for £11,602.04 to insure his Vauxhall Astra which he bought two years ago for £4,700.
Twenty-two year-old Ben, who has five years of unblemished driving to his name in no claims, was offered a reduction of £10,585.80 if he paid it all up front as opposed to one initial payment of £2,117,24 and 10 further payments of £948.48. Needless to say Ben snubbed the offer and is browsing the comparison sites.
“I was shocked!” said Ben who paid just over £1,000 last year with Swinton. “I can’t understand how they can charge that much. I would have to write off my car three times to get my money’s worth!”
The insurance industry has been criticised recently for punishing young drivers with high premiums but has defended its policy by blaming the rising claims made as well as the number of uninsured drivers on the road causing accidents.
“They punish the younger generation with silly prices,” Ben (left) added. “I know something like that is never cheap but surely after five years of driving I have proven myself to be a competent driver that doesn't do anything wrong? The younger ones are getting punished for everyone else’s mistakes.
“There should definitely be something done to really clamp down on uninsured drivers. Because of them I'm getting quotes like this... ridiculous!”
