Police and Crime Commissioner for Dyfed-Powys, Christopher Salmon (pictured), has revealed that he has discussed the issue of dishing out police cautions with his new Chief Constable.
His comments come after Justice Secretary Chris Grayling shared his concern that some forces in the UK were using police cautions for up to 45% of offences, even for serious crimes.
Mr Salmon said: “Following the Justice Secretary's announcement, I have discussed the use of cautions with Chief Constable Simon Prince. We will look at how they are used in Dyfed-Powys.
“Cautions are an important tool for officers, allowing them to use their professional discretion. They must be used appropriately, though. I want to be sure they are and their use is not driven by excessive emphasis on detection rates.”
