Welshpool Livestock Sales report on a highly successful auction at Buttington Cross Welshpool on Monday.  

OTMS (55)

An increase in the number of over thirty month cattle presented for sale today, selling to an increased overall average of 148.7ppkg. 36 older cows sold to a top price of £1317.44 for a Limousin weighing 716kg from C D Gittins & Co Lower Llivior. C D Gittins & Co also sold a British Blue cow weighing 810kg to £1233.54. The older cows sold to average 140.39ppkg. The younger cows between the age of 48months and 72 months sold to a top price of £1576.77 for a Limousin weighing 933kg from W R Jones Hanfache. Bulls sold to £1588 for a British Blue weighing 794kg from S J Smith Penybryn. C D Gittins & Co Gittins Lower Llivior receives the Briarwood Products Ltd prize of £25 for the highest price older cow sold on the day. We will be holding a sale for TB Tested over thirty Month cattle from Monday 8th April at 9am in ring 2. FAT CATTLE (9)

Only nine fat cattle presented for sale today selling to a fantastic average of 244ppkg for the steers and 219ppkg for the heifers. Top price of the day was 270ppkg for a British Blue heifer weighing 529ppkg from G Bound & Son Cefn Bach. Mr Bound also sold other quality heifers & steers to 269ppkg 244ppkg and 238ppkg. Three heifers from J C Evans Belan Newydd sold for 225ppkg, 199ppkg and 191ppkg.

G Bound & Son Cefn Bach receives the Briarwood Products Ltd prize of £25 for the highest price per kilo animal sold on the day. Weekly sale of Fat cattle every Monday commence at approximately 12.30pm. More Fat Cattle urgently required to meet a very strong demand from potential purchasers. An entry of  4653 Prime Hoggets, sold to an overall average of 191ppkg.

Super Lights (17.5kg to 25.4kg) (34) to 165ppkg from RA & R Bebb Llwyn Dolithel. Average of 153ppkg.

Lights (25.5kg to 32kg) (400) to 200ppkg from CL & C Watkins Bank Farm. Others to 190ppkg from T C Evans Bryncyrch. Average of 155ppkg.

Standards (32.1kg to 39kg) (607) to 215ppkg from CL & C Watkins Bank Farm. Others to 209ppkg from S J Smith Penybryn. Average of 177ppkg.

Mediums (39.5kg to 45.5kg) (1663) to 230ppkg from CJ & LM Davies Lawns Farm. Others to 229ppkg from D Langford The Gaer. Average of 199ppkg. 

Heavies (45.1kg to 52kg) (995) to 210ppkg from M J Williams Ponyperson. Others to 208ppkg from Lythwood Sheep Ltd. Average of 191ppkg. 

Over Weights (Over 52kg) (577) to 190ppkg from CJ & LM Davies Lawns Farm. Others to 185ppkg from CJ & LM Davies Lawns Farm. Average of 167ppkg.

SPRING LAMBS (206)

An entry of 206 spring lambs, selling to an overall average of 255ppkg

Lights (8) to 238ppkg from TWG Davies Penygriag. Others to 229ppkg from JM & IM Lewis Erwbarf. Average of 230ppkg.

Standards (161) to 271ppkg from J & J Beavan & Sons Winsbury. Others to 270ppkg from D Langford The Gaer. Average of 256ppkg.

Mediums (36) to 271ppkg from N E Hughes 20 Rorrington, F G Hilditch Green Hill & EJ & AJ Roberts Longlands. Others to 266ppkg from D Langford The Gaer. Average of 258ppkg. 

CULL EWE (1943)

A slightly reduced entry of met with a harder trade but still favourable compared to many other centre. The average just shy of £47 also reflects the much poorer quality of sheep forward. More strong heavier weighted ewes required. Best ewes still saw plenty of bidders to top at £130 for the nice Texel ewes from Mr G Davies Lan Farm. Strong Mule saw £80 - £90. A very large proportion of the ewes were very plain which saw a difficult trade. More in the £30 - £40 bracket then for many weeks. No outstanding rams this week, but desent rams were £75 – 390 with a top of £94 from D E Morgan & Son Brynelen. Rams averaged just under £58. Weekly sale of cull sheep to immediately follow the sale of fat lambs at approximately 12noon.

STORE LAMBS

A small entry of store lambs. Mixed and clean lambs achieved a top price of £67.50 from E A Rees & Co Borfa Newydd. Mixed and ctup lambs achieved a top price of £38.80 from D H Williams & Son Maes y Criau. A large entry of 130 cade lambs sold to a top of £26 from D R Owen & Sons Sandilands selling to  average £10.

COUPLES: An entry of 230 ewes with lambs at foot. Mule as found ewes with twin lambs at foot achieved £146 from R Edwards Ivy End. Suffolkx yearling ewes with twin lambs at foot achieved a top price of £158 from I & J Evans LLwynhywel.

STORE LAMBS: Store lambs to commence at 10.30am with couples and & Cade Lambs to follow. Store lambs & Couples will be located outside next Monday 22nd April and Cade Lambs inside the building as usual.

COWS & CALVES

Nine cows & calves met with a better trade than a fortnight ago with more potential buyers around the ring although quality was a bit scarce. Top price of the day was £1900 for a Limousinx 1st Calver with a Simmentalx heifer calf presented by AS & EM Goolden & Son Cil Bach Meifod. JBC Gwillim Bwlch Garth sold two 3rd calvers (one Limousinx & one Herefordx) with charolaisx calves at foot for £1410 and £1610 respectively. WA & OE Lloyd & Co Tynshettin sold some 7th Calvers with Charolais calves at foot to £1180 . EJ & AJ Roberts Longlands sold a 2002 born cow with a Charolais heifer calf for £1200. A breakdown of the prices achieved were as follows: £1800 + 1 lot, £1600 - £1800 1 lot, £1400 - £1600 1 lot, £1200 - £1400 3 lots, less than £1200 3 lots.

Entries now invited for the next Sale of Cows and Calves will take place on Monday 29th April. We will be holding a cow & calf sale every Monday through May and June.
