Welshpool Livestock Sales report on a highly successful auction at Buttington Cross Welshpool on Monday.  

OTMS (52)

An entry of 52 over thirty month old cattle sold to average 143ppkg overall. Thirty six older cows over 72 months of age sold to average 135ppkg. Five younger cows averaged 149ppkg, Steers and Heifers sold to average o183ppkg and 159ppkg respectively. A Welsh Black weighing 855kg topped the sale for the older cows at £1410.75 from WG & SE Vaughan Penybank. M & JE Jones & DEC Davies Cwm sold a Limousin cow weighing 675kg to £1235.25. A British Blue Heifer under 48months old weighing 741kg from W R Jones Henfache sold for £1674.66. WG & SE Vaughan Penybank receive the Briarwood Products Ltd prize of £25 for the highest price older cow sold on the day. FAT CATTLE (8)

Only eight fat cattle presented for sale today selling to a fantastic top price of 270ppkg for a Limousin heifer weighing 549kg from GW & BA Haynes Trefnant Isaf. Messers Haynes also sold other Limousin to 254ppkg, 250ppkg & 246ppkg. JC Evans & Co Belannewydd presented Limousin heifers to 230ppkg and 218ppkg. GW & BA Haynes Trefnant Isaf receives the Briarwood Products Ltd prize of £25 for the highest price per kilo animal sold on the day. Weekly sale of Fat cattle every Monday commence at approximately 12.30pm. More Fat Cattle urgently required to meet a very strong demand from potential purchasers. Lights (25.5kg to 32kg) (207) to 188ppkg from W & R Beamond Cwmcarnedd. Others to 187ppkg from I & MJ Lllyd Tanyrallt Farm. Average of 173ppkg.

Standards (32.1kg to 39kg) (368) to 213ppkg from G J E Hughes & Son Old House. Others to 197ppkg from FG & G Mountford Middle Heldre. Average of 182ppkg.

Mediums (39.5kg to 45.5kg) (1766) to 230ppkg from G Ratcliffe Whixall Hall. Others to 222ppkg from D Langford The Gaer. Average of 210ppkg. 

Heavies (45.1kg to 52kg) (1266) to 222ppkg from Lythwood Sheep Ltd. Others to 217ppkg from CJ & LM Davies Lawns Farm. Average of 197ppkg. 

Over Weights (Over 52kg) (514) to 196ppkg from CJ & LM Davies Lawns Farm. Others to 188ppkg from J Davies Green Farm. Average of 155ppkg.

SPRING LAMBS (385)

An entry of 385 spring lambs, selling to an overall average of 264ppkg

Lights (25.5kg to 32kg) (8) to 239ppkg from T S Davies Brynmawr. Others to 237ppkg from W Davies Brynglas. Average of 235ppkg.

Standards (32.1kg to 39kg)  (219) to 286ppkg from R S Kinsey Upper Aldress. Others to 279ppkg from EG & AW Pugh Cefn. Average of 263ppkg.

Mediums (39.5kg to 45.5kg) (148) to 286ppkg from JT & EB Kinsey The Green. Others to 282ppkg from D W Roberts Glancamlas. Average of 266ppkg. 

Heavies (45.1kg to 52kg) (9) to 240ppkg from JT & EB Kinsey The Green. Others to 231ppkg from D W Roberts Glancamlas. Average of 227ppkg.

Over Weights (Over 52kg) (1) to 195ppkg from D W Roberts Glancamlas.

CULL EWE (2385)

An increased entry met a slightly harder trade, but still favourable to many other reports. There were a very large number of very plain and poor ewes is the entry, with quite a few “oddments” at less than £10, which depressed the average somewhat. Ewes averaged a whisker under £40, reflecting the number of plain ewes sold. Rams averaged £57. Top price ewes went to L Simpson Dingleside at £102. Top 10 pens averaged £95. Cull hoggs sold to £81. Weekly sale of cull sheep to immediately follow the sale of fat lambs at approximately 12noon.    

STORE LAMBS, COUPLES & CADE LAMBS.  

A small entry of 40 store lambs. Mixed and clean lambs achieved and average of £59, reaching to a top price of £76 from V E Lewis & Son The Garn. Tup lambs achieved a top price of £48 from A J McVicar Garth Cottage. Aswel tup lambs also achieving a top price of £48 from A J McVicar.

COUPLES: An entry of 430 couples achieving an average of £91. Mule as found ewes with twin lambs at foot achieving a top price of £152 from Bronhyddan Farms Ltd. Close behind were pure bred Texel, as found ewes with single lambs achieving £150 from D C Jerman Tygwellt.

CADE LAMBS: An entry of 93 Cade Lambs achieving an average of £9. A strong texel ewe lamb achieved a top price of £23 from D R Owen & Sons Sandilands. Similar lambs sold to £21 and £20 from the same vendor.

Sale to commence a 10.30am next Monday 29^th April. In the Outside pens. Starting with store lambs with couples and Cade Lambs to follow.

DAIRY COWS

A catalogue sale of Dairy cows took place at Welshpool Livestock Sales on Monday 22^nd April 2013. A sound trade was seen for the cows and heifers presented. Buyers are still slightly cautious in purchasing cows and heifers due to the late spring conditions. R & R Corfield & Co Bronynant presented seven 1^st lactation heifers, selling to a top price of £1950 for Terleing Hallow Goldwin. Messer Corfield averaged £1671 per head. Three 2^nd lactation cows from J R Wilkinson Dyffryn sold for £1930, £1810 and £1760. Next Sale of Dairy cows will take place on Monday 6^th May 2013.
