A gathering point in Welshpool renowned as anything from an unofficial round-the-clock drinking den to a hanging out spot for bored youngsters is set to undergo £30,000 transformation.

The area opposite the Spar is to be turned into a town “focal point” under plans announced by Welshpool Town Council who are working closely with Powys County Council to develop the scheme, which will be themed on the Welshpool and Llanfair Light Railway.

The project will enlist the support of High School students who will work alongside professional artist, Saffron Waghorn of Brecon. The council says the project will be practical with opportunities to interact.

Town Clerk Robert Robinson explained: “This project is one which the Council is looking forward to completing.  It will be a focal point on this important site in the middle of the Town.”

The High School, working with the Artist, will produce three schemes which will be the subject of a public consultation in the late summer.  Once a scheme has been selected, planning consent will be sought and the project taken forward to completion.

Meanwhile, work on a sculpture designed by High School student Harriet Bates (right) is expected to be completed in June. The design won a competition and will be brought to life outside the Tourist Information Centre along with five flag poles.

Other projects created to spruce up the town and provide more facilities this year include two new playgrounds at Brookfield Road and the new Country Park at The Flash. Resurfacing work of the Maes Y Dre Old Tennis Courts Parking Area is also expected to proceed soon.
