A family-run caravan park near Welshpool,  which has won a string of national awards, is celebrating its 40th anniversary with an open weekend this weekend.

Hidden Valley Caravan Park at Maesmawr, near Welshpool was established in 1973 by Philip Jones and his family and welcomed its first caravan holiday homes later that same year.

The five star park, which was named the Calor Best of the Best Parks in Britain award for the Millennium, now has 180 pitches and is popular with owners from the West Midlands who enjoy the peace and tranquility, beautiful scenery and wide range of quality facilities.

Offering holiday homes, lodges and chalets, the 30-acre park is located in a picturesque wooded valley near the village of Guilsfield. The park overlooks its own private trout lake, which is also a renowned wildlife sanctuary and home to its trademark black swans.

Scenic walks lead through the surrounding woods and pastures on the 200 acres of farmland, in which Hidden Valley is situated. Facilities include a leisure centre with an indoor swimming pool and gym, a nine hole golf course, fly fishing, tennis and even clay pigeon shooting.

On show at the open weekend will be the latest 2013 caravan holiday homes and lodges and visitors will be entertained by trout fishing and birds of prey demonstrations together with classic car tours of the park.

“Our owners like the peace, quiet and tranquillity that the park offers” said Philip’s son, David. “We have an even split between retired couples and families on the site and firm friendships are established lasting for many years.”

A souvenir booklet, which has been produced to celebrate the park’s 40 birthday, shows the evolution over the years, supported by major investment by the Jones family, who also run a working livestock farm.

Tony Bywater, chairman of award-winning Shrewsbury-based caravan dealership, Salop Leisure, said the company was proud to have been associated with Hidden Valley Caravan Park and the Jones family over many years.

“Philip has been the leader in raising the standard of caravan parks across Mid Wales and has won virtually every major award there is to win in the industry,” he added. “This fantastic caravan park is a great credit to him and his family and represents massive investment over the past 40 years.”
