Bank Holiday bonanza for town

27/05/2013 @ 07:16

It’s been a glorious weekend to remember for Welshpool, with well organised events providing the local economy with a timely shot in the arm.

Sunday in particular saw residents and visitors pack the town, with Waterloofest’s It’s a Knock-Out and the Welshpool Music Festival providing a cracking day out.

More than 40 acts played to pubs filled to capacity with some having to call in emergency beer runs to meet demand. Organisers have already promised to stage another event.

Monday’s weather took a turn for the worse with Sunday’s blue skies turning overcast and chilly, but nevertheless the Carnival  marched its way through the one-way system to Maesydre where a decent crowd braved the weather.

And it looks like MyWelshpool’s intervention to get the major satnav manufacturers to update their maps to include the one-system has finally worked.

Cars ticked through the controversial system better than any Holiday weekend since its introduction two years ago. Judging by the accents in the town centre on Sunday and Monday, many decided to stop too and provide more vital income for local businesses.

Events of this scale are not easy to organise and take a lot of time and effort. But that effort was certainly appreciated by the MyWelshpool team.

This evening, a post by Coco Coffee House hopefully summed up the town's collective weekend trade by stating: "This has been the busiest Bank Holiday we have ever had. Incredible!"
