Singer steps closer to stardom

Middletown singer/songwriter Dai Robs has taken a step closer to securing a record deal after being selected from hundreds of hopefuls at the Welsh Open Mic auditions held in Cardiff at the weekend.

Just three weeks after launching his debut solo album, Dai (right) has hit the road to try and secure the national recognition that could lead to a recording contract.

“The other performers were awesome and I feel truly lucky to have progressed,” Dai said. “I performed my original song ‘Lifeboat’ into a cover of Shaka Khan ‘Ain't Nobody’. The crowd really got into it and were amazing. These are really exciting times for me!”

Dai is one of only a handful of artists to survive the X-Factor-style auditions with the judges sharing the crowd’s enthusiasm for the artist’s performance. He will now go through to the Regional finals which cover the Midlands, Wales, London and South West.

Open Mic UK 2010 is a national talent competition which searches for the UK’s best singers, singer/songwriters, rappers and vocalists of all genres who perform either covers or original material.

Chris Grayston head of A&R at Future Music commented: “We are searching for an act that not only has the live ability to impress an audience, industry judges and A&R associates, but an act that has the potential to become a professional recording artist. The standard was high last year and this year looks set to be even better.”

The final will be held in front of a massive crowd at the O2 Arena and the winner will not only gain a breakthrough recording deal but also join the Open Mic Tour which will consist of 100 gigs countrywide.

Meanwhile, Dai is set to appear on a unique compilation album which will feature the best songs from local artists and will be released before Christmas.
