Adele, you did us proud!

Welshpool’s Adele Nicoll has announced herself on the world stage after finishing 11th in the IAAF World Youth Championships in Ukraine.

Despite the drama of her kit getting lost en route and arriving two days later, Adele, 16, cruised through this morning’s qualifying group in fifth to be ranked at nine for this afternoon’s shot put final.

And she really did Welshpool and Great Britain proud in front of the live TV cameras as she threw 15.93m in her third and final effort, just 7cm below her personal best. Her previous two throws went for 15.56m and 15.72m.

Victory went to Emel Derelli, 17, of Turkey whose first mighty throw of 20.14 proved to be the best of the day as well as a championship record. It was only 38cm short of the world’s best for the youth section. Russia’s Alena Bugakova was second with 18.60m with the USA’s Ashlie Blake throwing 17.57m for third.
