Local birdlife ‘bags’ £1 million

12/07/2013 @ 11:16

Every 5p that has been spent in Tesco stores in Wales has contributed towards more than £1 million being raised for RSPB Cymru.

The figure has been release to coincide with a Roadshow that will swing into Welshpool’s Tesco store on July 14 to show shoppers just how the money is being spent.

Customers will be able to chat with RSPB Cymru staff and volunteers and watch a series of short films about the stories behind the projects they’ve helped pay for.

The introduction of the levy in Wales 18 months ago has seen up to a 96% reduction in the usage of single use carrier bags, something that RSPB Cymru’s Director Katie-jo Luxton warmly welcomes. She said: “I’m proud that the people and politicians in Wales together have led the way in tackling the number of plastic bags in the environment.

“The money raised has been a bonus and has come at an incredibly welcome time for us. This money has helped replace other sources of income which have now disappeared, and has allowed RSPB Cymru to continue  to do vital work to help give nature a home in Wales, as well as creating new opportunities to protect our wonderful wildlife and to bring it into peoples’ lives.”
