16/07/2013 @ 02:32

Some of the 200 passengers on an Arriva train which smashed into a tractor on a level crossing at Buttington, near Welshpool, have been treated at the scene.

Up to 200 passengers were reported to be on on board the 10.06am Birmingham to Aberystwyth service when it was involved in the accident earlier today.

It is understood the driver of the train was shaken but not injured and the driver the farm vehicle was not seriously injured. Emergency services from Welshpool and Newtown were called to the scene along with those from neighbouring Shropshire.

An Arriva Trains spokeswoman said passengers were being taken off the train and were being checked by paramedics before being taken on by coach.

Passenger Callum Fitzpatrick (@Callum_fitz1227) took this photograph while on board. He said the train hit the tractor at full speed.

Services between Shrewsbury and Machynlleth have been replaced by a bus service.
