Train returns to town centre

30/08/2013 @ 10:52

It is 50 years since the Welshpool to Llanfair railway re-opened, and while the line celebrates its steam gala this weekend, a mural depicting an important part of the town’s history has been taking shape.

The giant painting, on the wall of Derek’s Plaice in Church Street, is being completed by artist Anna Roberts and it recalls a time when the railway once passed through the town centre to the former Smithfield market. A second town centre mural is to be painted in September.

“The murals are part of an overall scheme to create a Town Trail along the entire route that the train took through the town,” said local historian Alan Crowe who has been supported by residents and businesses in completing the project.

“I am now looking for original photos of the train in town, in particular passing through Woodside and Bron y Buckley. This weekend I have a stand at Raven Square station to promote the project, as part of the railway’s steam gala. I can also be contacted on 07782 166342.”
