Wrexham’s new £250 million super prison will provide a huge boost for Montgomeryshire, according to MP Glyn Davies.
Mr Davis says the new prison will create around 1,000 jobs with local companies in the running for millions of pounds worth of construction projects.
Mr Davies said the new prison will also be welcomed in Montgomeryshire because of easier access for prisoners to their families and the communities to which they will return after serving their sentence.
“Having a prison located so near to mid Wales is also very good news for Welsh prisoners and their families,” said Mr Davies.
“I have always been very committed to doing everything possible to rehabilitate prisoners after they have served their sentence. The most effective investment we can make in the prison service is helping prisoners change the way they approach life and not re-offend. Having a prison at Wrexham will make it much easier for family and friends to visit Welsh prisoners, helping integration back into communities easier and more successful when they are released.
“After Shrewsbury Prison (pictured) was closed earlier this year, the nearest prison to Montgomeryshire was Wolverhampton. Today’s announcement is good news economically and socially for the whole of Mid and North Wales – but Montgomeryshire is particularly well placed to benefit.”
Work on the new prison will begin next summer, and it will be fully operational by end of 2017.
