Griff, Wanners, Wilding in for 'Legends'

24/10/2013 @ 12:05

Three of the best known local footballers of recent times will once again wear the Welshpool Town or Newtown shirts for a legends charity match next week.

Carl Griffiths (pictured) left Welshpool as a 16-year-old and spent two decades plying his trade professionally with the likes of Manchester City, Portsmouth and Leyton Orient. While school mate Wayne Evans, commonly known as Wanners, joined Walsall at 21 and enjoyed 15 years in the professional game after switching to Rochdale too. Pete Wilding became a big Shrewsbury Town favourite and will be pulling on the red of Newtown, unless Welshpool step in to remind him of his spell with the Lilywhites!

They have all confirmed they will play in the charity legends match at Latham Park on November 3 alongside a host of other big names from the local game.

An U9 and U10 Children’s game takes place at 1.30pm before the main event at 3pm. Entry will be £3, with kids under U16 and accompanied by an adult gaining entry for free.

The goal is to make this an annual event with funds being raised for Marie Curie Cancer Care.
