Superfast broadband welcomed

18/12/2014 @ 09:40
Moves to improve broadband speeds in the Welshpool area  and provide business with grants to fund superfast connection have been welcomed by Powys County Council.

Superfast Cymru, a partnership between BT and Welsh Government, is rolling out its superfast fibre optic broadband in Powys now. More than 4,000 are already able to access the service with the majority due to get access by spring 2016.

Cabinet Member for Regeneration, Councillor Rosemarie Harris said; “Superfast broadband connections are vital for the future economic health of the county. The continued roll-out of superfast broadband coupled with grants for businesses for connection are a welcome boost for the county.

“Grants are now available for ultrafast broadband connection – connections of at least 30mbps upload speed – are available in Wales’ Enterprise Zones and Local Growth Zones. As a result businesses located anywhere in Powys can apply for a grant.

“The county council is committed to promoting and developing sustainable development in the county and the wider region. We are about to embark on a new initiative ‘Growing Mid Wales’ with colleagues from Ceredigion County Council and Welsh Government to identify and prioritise sustainable economic development.

“Key components within the work will be business support, tourism promotion, inward investment, innovation and enterprise all of which will demand high quality ICT infrastructure.”
