‘Largest economic change for decades’

19/05/2015 @ 02:02

The new hourly train service connecting Welshpool to both Shrewsbury and Aberystwyth has been described as the “largest economic change for decades”.

The service was introduced yesterday with a civic fanfare that saw the Deputy Mayor Cllr Steve Kaye take the 1.53pm train to Shrewsbury along with Cllrs E Bleivas, H Evans and Heather Chave.

The station was livened up by bunting and music as the train arrived with councilors from other towns along the route also on board.

Following a reception in Shrewsbury where passengers were met by the town’s Mayor, Town Clerk Robert Robinson said: “It was a great event to celebrate the new train services which will probably be the largest economic change for Welshpool for decades.”

Campaigners have been saying for 20 years that an hourly service would provide an economic shot in the arm for Welshpool by connecting the town with the rest of Britain through public transport like never before.
