Local food and drink, sporting activities and a talk by wildlife presenter Iolo Williams are just some of the attractions at Powys County Council’s National Eisteddfod centre.

The council’s presence titled Pentref Y Cyngor is a showcase of some the best produce, sporting and cultural activities the county has to offer under the theme of ‘Live, work and play in the green heart of Wales’.

In an action packed week, which gets underway on Saturday (August 1), the council will have themed events on a daily basis promoting food and drink, sport and recreation, culture and the environment.

Cabinet member for Welsh Language, Councillor Arwel Jones said; “The National Eisteddfod is a unique opportunity for the county to showcase the very best it has to offer to the rest of Wales and we are inviting visitors to come along and enjoy the experience.

“We have exciting events running all week, with three distinct areas; a giant tipi with performance stage and craft activities, Powys Pantri for local produce and demonstrations by award winning and celebrity chefs, a recreation area for a range of sports and a sensory garden created by Dragontree, a service for adults with learning disabilities.

“Monday sees Beca Lyne-Pirkis, finalist from British Bake Off and now presenter of S4C’s Becws host a cookery demonstrations in the pantri on Monday and later in the week BBC weatherman Derek Brockway will be showing off his culinary skills.

“Wildlife enthusiasts can listen to Springwatch regular and local expert Iolo Williams give a talk on his favourite subject at the tipi on Wednesday. Welsh National Opera’s principal harpist Katherine Thomas doing harp recital at the same venue on Thursday.

“We are presenting a range of sports activities including judo, sumo wrestling, tennis, rugby, football, laser shooting in the Ardal Hamdden and away from the Maes the council has organised guided walks and cycling tours so that visitors can get a flavour of the wonderful sights to be found in this beautiful part of Wales.

“The whole week is packed with events and is set to be a spectacular showcase for Montgomeryshire and the whole of Powys.” He added.
