Rubbish collections may be every 3 weeks

31/07/2015 @ 02:25
It used to be once a week, then it was every other and now your rubbish could soon be collected every three weeks.

Powys County Council has revealed it is proposing to collect refuse from homes in Welshpool and throughout the county every three weeks from later this year as part of its ongoing attempts to cut costs.

But the news isn’t expected to go down well with residents who have already been vocal about the two week collection service.

The council says it will continue with weekly recycling and waste food collection services, but it wants to collect refuse every three weeks.

It is going out to consultation to ask residents for their opinion.

A statement said: “Three weekly rubbish collections are being considered to reduce the costs, as well as achieving the strict recycling targets set by Welsh Government.

“The council is required to meet the Welsh Government statutory 58 per cent recycling rate by 2015/16, achieve 64 per cent by 2019/20 and 70 per cent by 2024/25.

“By changing to a three weekly collection it will encourage residents to utilise the weekly recycling services (including food waste) provided by the council and increase the recycling rate to reach these targets.”

The council said weekly recycling collections (including food waste) will continue to be provided by the council and will be unaffected by any changes to the rubbish collections.

Cabinet Member for Environment and Sustainability, Councillor John Powell said: “The severe financial pressures we are under mean that we need to reduce the current spend, the council needs to make savings of around £70m by the end of the decade across all services.

“We would encourage residents to complete the survey to provide their views to help shape the future of rubbish collections in Powys.

“We would also like to urge residents to reduce, reuse and recycle their waste at every opportunity to minimise the amount of rubbish placed in the wheeled bin.”

Views can be given via an online consultation which is available on the council’s website www.powys.gov.uk/haveyoursay from Monday 10 August 2015.

The consultation page provides details of the proposed three weekly rubbish collection service and a survey to capture views. Paper copies of the proposals and surveys will be available in all libraries.

The consultation closes on Friday, 28 August 2015.
