Eisteddfod to provide £7m boost

The village of Meifod is expected to welcome over 150,000 visitors this week for a National Eisteddfod that analysts believe will pump £7m into the local economy.

The figure was revealed by Powys County Council who will be keeping an eye on the benefits the event brings with an eye to attracting more in the future.

Cabinet Member for Welsh Language, Councillor Arwel Jones said the economic and cultural benefits would provide a positive legacy for the whole area for years to come.

“With an estimated 150,000 visitors due to visit the county over the next eight days the economic impact for the local community cannot be under estimated. Independent financial research has shown that local businesses could benefit by more than £7m with local outlets receiving most support,” she said.

“The local tourism and hospitality sector is always one of the main beneficiaries of an Eisteddfod’s visit. With so many Eisteddfod visitors spending at least one day during the week exploring the area we are confident that the impact of the event will boost the economy for years to come.

“But, it is not just the economy that will benefit, the event has stimulated great interest in Welsh culture and the Welsh language and we should take advantage of that interest and provide greater opportunities for the delivery our services through the medium of Welsh.

“The county council, with Welsh Government support, has already set up a working group of elected members, the voluntary sector, academics and the business community to look at ways of combating the decline of Welsh speakers.

“It will look at the opportunities for people to use the Welsh language, treating the Welsh language no less favourably than the English language and at opportunities to promote the use of the language.

“But, before that we have a week to enjoy and celebrate Welsh culture here in Meifod,” she added.
