Welshpool Livestock Sales report on a busy day of trading at Buttington Cross on Monday.

OTMS (46)

46 otm cattle forward this week selling to an overall average of 112.83ppkg.

Topping the section was a South Devon x cow weighing 951kg making £1179.24 (124ppkg) from JRS Hughes & Co, Lower Munllyn. W T Jones & Co, Croesllwyn, presented a Limousin cow weighing 795kg making £1144.80 (144ppkg).

Otm bulls topped at £1267.50(130ppkg) for a Charolais weighing 975kg from M A Andrew & Son, Tycerrig.  Cows 48 to 72 months topped at £946.25 (125ppkg) for a Charolais weighing 757kg from TH & DA Thomas, Sarn Farm. Heifers under 48 months reached £1004.64 (168ppkg) for a Limousin heifer weighing 598 kg from EE & MJ Jones & Son, Cwmbychan.

PRIME LAMBS (5169)

An entry of 5169 prime lambs selling to an average of 139.79 ppkg.

Lights (236) to 156ppkg from RR & CE Hodnett, Wernygyfron. Others to 151ppkg from R A Jones, Red Gwenthrew. Average of 135.74ppkg.

Standards (927) to 190ppkg from H F Jones, Tynewydd. Others to 187ppkg S Jones, Tynewydd. Average of 136.38ppkg.

Mediums (2370) to 200ppkg from H F Jones, Tynewydd. Others to 198ppkg from E L Evans, Derlwyn. Average of 141.23ppkg.

Heavies (1371) to 171ppkg & 166ppkg from T & B Williams, Cil Mawr. Others to 164ppkg from E L, Derlwyn. Average of 139.34ppkg.

Over Weights (211) to 150ppkg from T & B Williams, Cil Mawr. Others to 147ppkg from A E Casewell, Bodynfoel. Average of 129.64ppkg.

CULL SHEEP (4229)

A big show of cull sheep met with slightly reduced averages of £47.10 for ewes and £67.37 for rams. Topping the ewe section was Red House Farm, Aberhafesp, with one ewe making £130 and four ewes making £120. 7 ewes from DTA Williams, Upper Bolbro, made £117. Rams topped at £128 for two rams from TE & EM Davies & Sons, Tyncwn.

STORE LAMBS

Another entry of 397 store lambs entering the market this week selling to an overall average of £48. Heavy Short term lambs sold from £54 - £59 with the majority of medium term farming lambs selling from £45 - £50. Well bred Charollais x mixed and clean lambs from E J Emerson, Cwm, Colebatch sold to £57.80 with Suffolk x and Mule ewes lambs from T Evans, Penycoed Uchaf, selling to £56.

Sale of Store Lambs to commence 10.30 am Weekly.

BREEDING EWES

A similar entry of 398 breeding ewes through the ring this week with Strong Suffolk x yearlings from A H Jones & Son, Hirrhyd, selling to £130. More Suffolk x yearlings from the same home sold to £116 and £112, whilst Texel x Yearlings from T J Pugh, Nantgwyn sold to £130. Older ewes appeared to be easier placed with strong three year old Suffolk x ewes from A Rees & Son, Tynllwyn, selling to £105 and full mouth Suffolk ewes from P R Evans & Son, Fachwen, sold to £94. An increased number of full and broken mouth Mule ewes forward selling from £56 to £77 depending on size.

Increased entries expected as the season progresses, sale of breeding ewes to commence at approximately 11 am through ring 4.

STORE CATTLE

Another excellent entry for August of 170 Store Cattle met with a Cracking trade once again with plenty of people looking to source cattle. There was an excellent show on offer which was reflected in the spirited bidding which returned averages of 226.08ppkg or £978.61 per head for bullocks and heifers at 218.16ppkg or £939.55 per head.
