The Grade II Listed building, which dominates the landscape of the town centre, once housed the world’s first mail order company before later becoming a department store and call centre and has been acquired by leading regional surveyors Towler Shaw Roberts, who are managing the building and marketing the vacant space on behalf of the new owners, the Welshpool-based Potter Group.

“Our client, James Potter, was keen to acquire the building as it presented an excellent opportunity to diversify his property portfolio – and invest in a local landmark building.

The imposing property, close to the town’s railway station, extends to around 80,500 sqft over six floors. It is already occupied by a number of retailers, including Littlewoods Clearance and Simply The Best Carpets.

Part of the upper floors are occupied by a local church.

The Royal Welsh Warehouse was developed in two phases by Sir Pryce Pryce-Jones from 1879. It was the location for the first mail order company in the world, retailing intially local Welsh Flannel, then other household goods, to customers around the globe.

It was later developed into a department store and warehouse, before it was taken over by Littlewoods, who retailed and operated a call centre there until recently.

The red brick building underwent major refurbishment in 2012 – and has an extensive car park at the rear.
