Mixed bag for Welshpool ladies

Welshpool Ladies go into the Christmas break knowing the best is yet to come following a frustrating start to the hockey season which has gathered recent momentum.

Over the past month, points were needed to avoid a relegation fight and they have come, as well as a fantastic victory for a New Year spot in the quarter final of the Welsh Cup.

Following consecutive 0-0 October draws against old rivals Newtown and Colwyn Bay, the Ladies got the boost they were looking for with wins over Pwllheli (2-1) and then Penllyn (1-0).

That form was taken into the final game of the year at an in-form Caernarfon for a place in the last eight of the Cup. With seven senior players missing, including goalkeeper Gez Charles, the Welshpool girls performed superbly for a 1-1 draw after normal time with victory sealed in the extra period.

At sixth in the league, only four points separate them from third so a big second half of the season awaits for a team that has grown in confidence as the season progressed.
