Controversy as Town reinstated in Cup

12/01/2011 @ 01:07

Technogroup Welshpool have been reinstated in the Central Wales Cup despite publicly pulling out of their third round tie with Tregaron Turfs last Saturday.

In a bizarre turn of events, the club contacted the Central Wales FA prior to the weekend to say they had a change of heart and their opponents were told on Friday afternoon that the match was back on.

But the Spar Division Two side refused to play, saying they had written confirmation that Welshpool had withdrawn and now believe they are a victim of being a ‘small’ club.

“We just can’t understand it,” said a club supporter who contacted mywelshpool. “The club had a phone call saying we had to play the match because Welshpool had changed their mind but we had already cancelled and told the players, sponsors and supporters. It was too late.

“We had been looking forward to the game for weeks and it would have been one of the biggest games in our history. It deflated the club to be told it was off and everyone had made we made other plans. To be told last minute they had changed their mind and we had to play it is not fair. I believe the club officials have written a letter to the Central Wales FA and I’m told they will consider our appeal a week on Thursday.

“Imagine it had been the other way around? I doubt very much that we would have been allowed back in if we did the same thing.”

Technogroup Welshpool’s General Manager Liam Pritchard apologised for the drama and explained: “After a conversation with Chris and Benji (management team) - who we didn't consult when we withdrew as we just assumed they'd not want additional fixtures – they expressed an eagerness to compete in the competition. We’re just awaiting official confirmation from CWFA.”

Should Technogroup Welshpool remain and beat Tregaron, they face the winners of Llansantffraid Village or Dolgellau who play their postponed match tonight (Wednesday).
