British bronze for super ’Del

Welshpool’s Adele Nicoll (pictured) has picked up one of her most precious medals yet, winning shot put bronze at the Senior British Championships which were also the Olympic qualifiers for Team GB.

The 19-year-old Birchfield Harrier has taken the British junior scene by storm, but is starting to make her mark on the seniors and is already the Welsh U23 record holder.

At the weekend she flexed her muscles against Britain’s best, and proved to be up to the challenge with a throw of 16.14cm for third, just 2cm behind silver medal winner Sophie Mckinna.

Gold medallist Rachel Wallader's winning throw was 16.67cm.

As always, Adele was quick to acknowledge those who have continued to help her along the way after receiving her medal at the Alexandra Stadium in Birmingham.

“I am extremely happy to have won bronze today at the Olympic Trials/Senior British Championships,” she said. “I am satisfied with the distance, 16.14m, just 2cm from the silver medal position. It was a great competition.

“I want to thank as always, Welsh Athletics’ Scott Simpson and Adrian Palmer, SSE, Rikki Lloyd, Vladimir Zinchenko, Valentina Fedjuschina, Chris Greatorex, Justine Nicoll, Paul Nicoll and everyone who wished me good luck for their continued support!”

Adele’s CV is already an impressive read: finalist in the World Youth Championships and European Under-20s, a former BBC Wales Junior Sportswoman of the Year and numerous British titles in the shot put and discus at various different age groups.

And as we all hope… the best is yet to come with her sights fixed on the next Commonwealth Games for Wales.
