Big award for Oval Zone

He may have been on the other side of the world recently, but Welshpool’s Gary Williams is celebrating a Welsh Award.

The local rugby stalwart is behind Oval Zone, a magazine covering Mid and North Wales rugby, and its social media operation has been voted the best by the All Wales Awards for Best Sports Social Media 2016.

He will now join the other winners at an Awards Evening in the Atlantic Hotel, Porthcawl on July 14.

Williams, Secretary of Welshpool RFC, said: “I am proud to have been selected as the winner of this award and thank everybody who has been kind enough to send me information, as well as Ellis Davies and all the team at 'All Wales Sport' for their help and support which is very much appreciated.”

Gary is webmaster of the Oval Zone, and assists with the North Wales Rugby Union, Welshpool RFC, COBRA RFC, Bala RFC, Nant Conwy RFC and Mold RFC websites.

“If somebody had told me a few years ago that I'd be uploading club websites, along with Twitter and Facebook accounts in my spare time at my age, I'd have thought they were mad! He added. “However, in this era of instant media, I'm loving every minute of it!”

As well as the websites, The Oval Zone has a Facebook account as well as a Twitter account which Gary hosts, along with the Mid Wales Rugby Twitter account, with approximately 5,000 followers.
