Weather now a cause for concern

The Spar League Cup, which was wiped out over the weekend due to frost, now looks set to run into May as administrators give a clear indication of a league extension.

Only Guilsfield in the Huws Gray Alliance managed to play their match at Flint as the Friday night frost made the pitches unsafe. It has left some sides, particularly in the Amateur League, without a game now for nearly three months.

And while league officials show no sign of panic yet, one has indicated that some serious rescheduling will need to be done.

Phil Woosnam (right), secretary of the Spar Mid Wales League, said this morning: “Unfortunately, the League Cup was wiped out at the weekend which is a small headache although this competition is now likely to be put back to March.

“There are no problems in Division Two even with their own cup yet to start. Whilst Division One is still anticipated to finish by the end of April, the league cup is likely to go on into May.”

Also over the weekend, Amateur League secretary Bernie Jones hinted that it too may face an extension if the poor weather continues.

The worst winter on record, following on from last year’s awful weather, has strengthened calls for a summer league and Welsh Premier Secretary, John Deakin, said he wants to leave a legacy of summer football when he retires next year.
