Following a difficult start to the New Year when questions were raised over the club’s first team’s future, Welshpool Rugby Club has today issued a defiant statement.
Officials reacted last week after fearing the club was slipping into the abyss with player numbers so low that there were serious concerns about fulfilling fixtures.
But following a dramatic last minute win at Bangor, the club’s first for two seasons, and an encouraging emergency meeting, the future seems a lot brighter.
The statement read:
“After the emergency meeting, the Committee of Welshpool RFC feel reassured that there is the commitment needed from players to help keep the 1st XV in Division 2 North.
Whilst no-one is under any illusions as to the size of this task, recent performances (including the victory at Bangor) have given a glimmer of hope for the team, and we would hope to see the level of dedication and commitment shown by the players in the past month continue for the rest of the season.
We now have fixtures on every weekend between now and the end of April, and hope to be able to build a bit of momentum and pick up a few points in games where we let ourselves down in the first half of the season.
There are only three points between 12th, and the relative 'safety' of 10th place, and we do not see any reason why we cannot pick up enough points to bridge this gap, provided that the players continue to work hard for each other, the club, and the town.”
