Youngsters in action
The Youths entertained Newtown but went down 20-3 in an entertaining game. After taking the lead with a penalty, Welshpool went a man down through inury and Newtown took advantage to score a converted try and took a 3-7 lead into the interval. Another try followed early in the second half before Welshpool fought back with a try of their own.
But a penalty and a try on the whistle gave Newtown the spoils and deprived Welshpool of a bonus point.
On Sunday, several junior sides were in action.
The Under 14s were edged out 36-40 at home to Oswestry in a close encounter, while the Under 13s game against Oswestry was called off due to lack of visitor numbers, a shame as this would have been the first time the club had fielded sides at the Under 12, 13 and 14 age groups on the same day.
The Under 12s were away at Shrewsbury, and despite missing several important players, they battled hard and came away with their reputation enhanced. With Shrewsbury able to rotate their entire side throughout the game, they were able to take a 40-0 lead by half time. Rather than let their heads drop, they continued to compete hard at every ruck and maul, and came away with a final score of 60-15 and a return fixture to work towards.
In the minis, the Under 8s and 10s also had home games, taking on sides from Shrewsbury and COBRA.
This weekend, the First XV have one of the most important games of the second half of the season at Machynlleth. With Machynlleth moving above Welshpool after a win over Llangollen last weekend, a win is vital for Welshpool if they have hopes of battling for a top four place. The gap between third and seventh is only six points, so there is still all to play for.
On Sunday, the Under 13s will be back in action as they host Shrewsbury at Maesydre as they continue preparations for their Easter tour. The Under 8s will also be in action again against COBRA and Aberystwyth in Meifod, and in the afternoon, the Girls Under 18s will take on Bishop's Castle.
Meanwhile, on January 27 the club is hosting a mixed ability event, taking on the Newtown Dragons and Shropshire Stags. Players can either play full-contact or touch within the same game. Anyone wanting to represent Welshpool, male or female, should get in touch with the club.
