Big weekend for local clubs

04/02/2011 @ 12:18

It’s a massive weekend of football for relegation threatened Guilsfield and Technogroup Welshpool who face stern tests in their fight for survival.

Guilsfield host fellow Huws Gray Alliance basement rivals Rhayader while Town’s boss Chris Herbert welcomes familiar faces in former club GAP Connah’s Quay at Maesydre.

The results could have huge influence on each club’s destiny so expect some feisty encounters.

Guilsfield lost 2-1 at Rhayader earlier in the season to a late goal and manager Russell Cadwallader reiterated again this week that it was “time to put a consistent run of results together”.

Meanwhile, Herbert said there will be no time for friendships for 90 minutes of game-time as he remains optimistic about clawing back the points at the bottom.

“I have a lot of good friends at GAP but that will be forgotten about during the game,” he said. “It is vital that we continue to build on our recent form and cause an upset on Saturday.”

Spar Mid Wales League

Montgomery face a big match as they bid to add momentum to their promotion bid in Division Two.

Clive McNamee’s men will go second if they can overturn Kerry and they will still have two games in hand on leaders Tregaron Turfs.

Abermule’s bid to secure mid-table comfort have suffered a blow after new signing Barry Bellis was ruled out for a month with injury. The striker has suffered a thigh injury and will start by missing this weekend’s double-header league game at Meifod on Saturday and Montgomeryshire Cup match against Kerry the following day.

However, the club has bolstered its ranks by re-signing former Karry, Llanidloes and Carno midfielder Jamie Selvey and persuaded young goalkeeper Gareth Williams to switch rugby for football.

The big game of Division One sees Llanidloes entertain leaders Berriew while Llanfair United travel to Llandrindod Wells. Llanrhaeadr go to Presteigne.

Amateur League

It’s top against bottom in the Honda Division One with Llanidloes Reserves taking on Berriew Reserves who have still only played five league games all season. Second placed Caersws Reserves play Guilsfield Reserves who have not played since November 9.

But spare a thought for Llanfair Reserves in Mitsubishi Division Two. They will hopefully play their first home league game of the season against Llansantffraid Village Reserves, weather permitting! Leaders Technogroup Welshpool Reserves travel to Llanfechain for the division’s match of the day.
