Newtown’s strike bowlers Ally Laird and Dave Anthony produced the goods as they condemned visiting Madeley to a 19-run defeat in the Shropshire Premier league at the weekend.

After being put in to bat, Newtown posted 151-5 with Tom Goodman’s unbeaten 57 leading the way.

But it became the Laird (5-38) and Anthony (4-58) show as they reduced the visitors to 132 all out.

Montgomery’s losing start to the Division One season continued into week two after they were put into bat by Shelton.

Only Tim Davies (26) made any headway as Monty were dismissed for just 126 in the 33rd over, which Shelton managed to reach for the loss of just four wickets.

Welshpool suffered at the hands of Condover, despite Tom Anderson smashing 73 to steer them to 156 after being put into bat. The home side needed seven wickets and 47.2 over to reach their target after some decent bowling from the Welshpool attack.

The newly named Guilsfield and Llandrinio Cricket Club picked up their first win of the campaign with a low scoring triumph at home to Oswestry III who were dismissed for just 63. Openers Sam Griffiths (26) and Chris Proctor (18) set the foundations for a comfortable six-wicket win.

In the reserve divisions, a 71 from wicket-keeper Dai Brown enabled Newtown II to set a hefty target of 219-7 at Pontesbury, who in return were restricted to 164-7.

Welshpool II were set 174 by Much Wenlock to chase but were reduced to 95 all out.
