Old enemy to meet in final

26/06/2017 @ 12:13

Old rivalries will be resumed in the final of the Montgomeryshire T20 Knock out as Newtown and Welshpool overcame Montgomery and Alberbury respectively in the semi-finals at Welshpool on Sunday.

Batting first after being inserted by Newtown captain John Anthony,  Montgomery got off to a flying start scoring 72 off their first 10 overs with telling contributions from Andrew Barker, Charlie Clifton and James Corfield.

However after a flurry of wickets fell the Lymore men limped to a disappointing 94 in their allotted 20 overs which was never going to be enough on the excellent Welshpool track.

Newtown went about their task purposefully reaching their target in 12 overs with Ryan Davies steering them home impressively, sealing their return to Maesydre for the final in emphatic fashion.

The second game of the day proved to be a cracking affair. Alberbury set about the Welshpool attack from the very beginning with the ball dispatched to all parts of the ground. None of the Welshpool bowlers escaped the punishment as the bordermen posted an imposing total of 174 in their 20 overs.

Welshpool’s reply was just as entertaining as Mathew Knight 30 and Patrick Davies 76 laid a solid foundation for the run chase. They were backed up by positive contributions by Tom Anderson and Adam Knight before wily veteran Russell Cadwallader secured victory in the 19th over.

The final will now take place at Welshpool with the date to be confirmed.
