Runs galore in cricket league

A late rally from Tom Foulkes wasn’t enough to push Newtown towards an unlikely win at top of the table Whitchurch on Saturday.

The bowlers played their part with five sharing two wickets apiece as the Premier League title favourites were dismissed for 232 in the 46th over in the Premier League.

But early wickets tumbled for Newtown and they were heading towards a low score until Foulkes came in at seven to hit 73. It wasn’t enough though as they fell well short on 158 all out.

Welshpool and Montgomery both won again in Division One, with Pool chasing down a decent target.

They were chasing 176-6 set by promotion chasing Cound, but Pool had Paul Chapman in form with his 75 steering Welshpool home in the 45th over for the loss of eight wickets.

Montgomery upset another promotion chasing side in Condover to continue their march away from the relegation spots.

James Corfield smashed a majestic 114 to see Monty through to 258-4 from their 45 overs. Andrew Barker supported with 66.

The centurion then opened the bowling to take 3-25 to restrict third-placed Condover to 201-9.

Sam Griffiths (65) hit another half century as Guilsfield returned to winning ways at title chasing Bridgnorth III in Division Four.

The opener was well supported by a decent mid-order as they reached 189-9 from their 40 overs. Dave Harris then took 3-33 as Guilsfield reduced their hosts to 152 all out.

In Reserve Division Two, there were wins for Newtown and Montgomery with Newtown II chasing down a whopping 270-4 set by Bomere Heath II. Ian Hancocks (90no), Richard Smout (77no) and Dai Brown (70) did the damage.

Harry Wilkinson took 6-26 as table toppers Montgomery II won by 71 runs at Beacon. Earlier Wilkinson (45) and Patrick Wilding (51) saw Monty through to 142-9, but Beacon’s reply didn’t get off the ground as they were bowled out for 71.
